Back in 2016 , Amos was found floating in H2O of Corpus Christi , Texas with his wings drooping . He was taken to theWildlife Rescue Centerat the nearby Texas State Aquarium , where it was unveil that the pelican had been shot — most likely while in flight , judging by the terms to both of his wings . Vets were able to stabilise his status and hold open Amos ’s life , but he ’s ineffective to extend his correct annexe fully , stand for he ’ll never fly again .

Since a flightless bird the size of a bambino would n’t have the best chances for success in the wild , Amos needed to transition to a life of comfortable captivity . But Amos is n’t like other birds . He ’s a people person . A go - getter . So while your norm , abruptly flightless pelican might be content to just kick back with a bucket of fish heads andwatch the gameon TV , Amos started internet .

For as long as humans have interact with animals , we ’ve found ways of give them jobs . Not only are they just intimately at certain things than we are , but few things find as good to our big , human core as seeing apupper with a purpose . And while Amos might not be afinely - tuned jock , he does come fit out with a very particular set of skills : most notably , a friendly personality and a goofy , wobbly consistence .

His affable , forthcoming nature made him a fast favorite among the Texas State Aquarium ’s keepers and visitors alike and , when it come time to encounter him a forever home , he seemed like a natural fit for the Bronx Zoo ’s Animal Ambassadors program .

Amos joins nigh 200 other Bronx Zoo animal with similar backstories who are part of the squad tasked with greeting families , campers , and scholarly person chemical group who confab the menagerie . As visitors learn more about these animals and their stories , the hope is that they ’ll grow an interest in the tremendous work ofveterinarians , animal rehab specializer , and zookeepers around the country who work to save animals just like Amos .

" This is an splendid example of recognise zoos and aquariums working together to pull through an animal that was negatively impacted by the measured action of people , " tell Bronx Zoo Director Jim Breheny in a press release . " Amos was in bad shape , but thanks to first-class workplace of the animal aid staff at theTexas State Aquariumand Bronx Zoo , this charismatic bird is thriving and will aid us further our mission through his story .
