Jeffery Pepper was the Best in Show justice at the 2021 National Dog Show . Here ’s how he approach his job .

On one of the large hot dog show weekend of the year , Jeffery Pepper is sit outside the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in a motorhome . He ’s bored .

He ’s taken a nap and read through email , but all his friend are inside , where group judging at the 2021 National Dog Show presented by Purina has begun Saturday good afternoon . But as the Best in Show judge , Pepper is n’t allowed inside . He ca n’t see the grouping - gain dogs until they infix his ring .

So he waits , with enough time on his hands to educate a duet of newsperson for nearly 40 minutes on how he approaches his craft .

" I ’ve got the easiest chore , " the judge with 36 year of experience says . " … I ’ve got the ointment of the crop . "

Pepper , from Boynton Beach , Fla. , only has to judge seven of the 1,584 dogs who started the mean solar day . The dogs he by and by inspect — German shorthaired pointerJade;KuvaszMo’Ne;Scottish deerhoundClaire;Lakeland terrierMM;affenpinscherChester;English bulldogWinter ; and Pyrenean sheepman Sasha — each won " best of breed " and later their groups .

He has no bad options , but his occupation is definitely not bare to a dog show boob like me . His Best in Show decision will be base on his rating of each dog — how they match their breed ’s write monetary standard , how they show in the ring , and whether they have a special something that makes them stand out .

" You have to pore on the whole picture , " he say .

Pepper was speaking right after the herding radical finished , so he hadthe breed standard for the Pyrenean shepherdon his iPad before him . If he knows the breeds he ’s judge , he always goes through the standards beforehand to prepare . He ’s been in the game so long that they ’re just refresher , but he still call for them fresh in his mind .

That ’s because he ’ll get less than three transactions to expect at each dog . The time actually drip to about 90 second when you take out all the paperwork and procedural process , he says . So his judging start justly aside , when the hound inscribe the ring while he ’s nearby waiting to be introduced .

" I ’m shit some overall evaluations of how close they come to the write breed monetary standard for that particular breed , on how well - balanced they are physically , their athleticism or lack therefrom depending on what the breed ’s intent is , " he says .

None of the dog are " gross , " so he ’ll have to decide where he might compromise . But what if he ca n’t decide between two dogs ? It ’s happened before , when he was judging a hound group that had two competition : anAfghan houndand awhippet . They both moved well , but the whippet " held her curves " as she moved , and that ’s rarefied . So she earned Pepper ’s nod .

" It had something a piffling bit special that fit within the requirements of the breed standard that you do n’t see that often , so you reward the excellency of that , " he says .

He dropped other knowledge during the audience : the variation of judges ; how to get involved in showing ( go to a show and talk to masses ) ; and how maybe just maybe a character inBest in Showwas named for him . ( He does n’t really know , though he probably could name who some of the character are based on . )

After Dog Show 101 with the newsman , Pepper threw on his tux and at long last take to go within . Heawarded Best in Show to the Scottish deerhound , her second serial National Dog Show Best in Show . He said the dog " really filled my center , " part of his own extend education .

" I ’m still learning today , " he says . " Every fourth dimension I go into the ring , I memorise something . "
