Of naturally we want to give our pets the best care that we maybe can , whether that ’s a right diet , proper veterinary care , grooming , exercise – there are so many facet of pet aid that a lot of us do n’t imagine about on a daytime - to - day basis . We recognise that there are things that we need to do to care for our pets every day but it ’s like going through the motions : you do the same dressing , you bung them the same dieting , you do the same physical exertion regimen …
But what we ’ve see from research of late is that there may be good dieting , good use , and that our dog are just as in melody with the world around them as we are and they do n’t wish to do the same things day after day ; they do n’t wish run through the same meal day after sidereal day .
If we can exchange things up a lilliputian bit for them and give them the undecomposed care potential , then that would be my end with this doggy podcast and I ’m hoping that you will reach out and share your info as well . I ’m go away to be interviewing experts from the pet diligence , other pet owners , different hoi polloi who are involved in caring for animals every day , and I ’m going to divvy up that information with you all of you through this show .

I would greatly prize your input on this .
Now , onto the topic …
For my first podcast today I wanted to talk about something that is near and dear to my inwardness . A circumstances of times when you ’re doing anything in the entertainment or the art industry , whether you are painting , whether you ’re play , whether you ’re write , whether you ’re doing a podcast – anything that you ’re putting out there for other mass to see , mind or interpret , most usually say that you should do what you acknowledge well .
I ’ve been a preferent owner and a dog-iron owner my whole life . We ’ve also had cat and other beast , so I obviously want to get involved with that as far as my career . And now for the last few eld I ’ve been writing and doing video and that variety of poppycock , and now I am quick to leap out into my very first podcast , and again I need to start off with dogs and I will research more as my podcast goes along , but for right now we ’re go to stick with dogs .
The one matter that I be intimate serious about dogs is rescuing . That ’s what I ’ve always tried to do for many many long time . We ’ve take many rescue heel into our home . As a tike my family always took in rescue dogs , and that ’s always been a love of mine , it ’s always been something that I ’ve been passionate about , speaking with other mass and educating other parent about this subject as well .
Along with rescuing comes the topic of irresponsible pet breeding , and as much as I wish to recommend for citizenry to rescue animals , I wish to take it one step further and educate multitude and advocate for us to band together as a community and as a society to seek to do whatever we can to get rid of irresponsible breeding of dog and other animals .
Irresponsible rearing is the reason that we need to rescue so many animate being . It ’s the reason that so many animals are contract from places like puppy pulverization , and it ’s the grounds that there are shelter filled with animals all over the world . Irresponsible breeding is a topic that I feel very passionately about , it ’s something and I pass a lot of time blab about , educating people about , it ’s something that I drop a tidy sum of time researching .
There ’s always info in the news about these thing . All you have to do is do a straightaway Google hunting and you ’ll find the modish puppy John Mill in the news show that they ’ve taken puppy out of the puppy mill or one of the bounteous things latterly in the news has been the meat market over in other land . Obviously that ’s not legal here , but they ’re breeding these dogs for meat and that kind of stuff .
Irresponsible reproduction is an issue that affect breeders as well as potential pet parent . It peculiarly strike close to my heart because we have rescue many dogs , many of them have had complications due to irresponsible breeding . presently we have a boxer named Chloe and when I prove to excuse Chloe ’s history , it ’s not that I can in as few words as I can because Chloe really has a firm history and it ’s all related to irresponsible nurture . It all comes back around to the improper fosterage that was acquire position for Chloe to come into this world .
I estimate I ’ll start with when we adopted Chloe , my packer . Chloe was underprice on the side of the route . She was rescued by a Good Samaritan who institute her to a local veterinary federal agency which happens to be the vet office that I bestow my dogs to . boxershorts are my breed of choice . We do have a lab and a beagle properly now but we ’ve had boxers for many years and I ’ve rescued many boxers .
Whenever I rescue a pawl I always bring them to my vet , that ’s our first full point on the way home . They get check out just to ensure . If you get a dog from a rescue or a protection organization , betting odds are they have already had a once over from a vet , but I care to have my personal vet look them over . Sometimes they see something that another expert has miss , sometimes they just get a flavour for the dog , the wienerwurst ’s personality , and they may be able to see some of those issue that were bring to my attending from the deliverance or from the shelter . I can wreak that to the care of my veterinary surgeon and then they ’ll have that scope moving forward like for my click .
So that ’s always our first stop . We ’ve had the same vet for over a ten , she know that we rescue Boxer . Chloe did n’t have a name at the sentence , but they had this bagger brought in , she was encompass in frostbite , she was meet pretty badly from malnutrition , she had n’t wipe out or had n’t eaten anything that gave her the nutrition that she need for a very long time , and the person that take her in they already had three dog and they could not keep Chloe .
Now some people say “ I ca n’t think that you would pluck up this dog and you would n’t keep it , ” but that was actually a very responsible thing for that person to mistreat up and say “ I need to deliver this dog . I want to help this dog but personally we ca n’t give to take forethought of it . ” Had they tried to take on Chloe ’s load themselves she probably would have ended up in a protection a piddling manner down the route .
Anyway , because that family would n’t have been capable to afford her and some of their other dogs may have been affected by that as well . So it was a responsible affair for them to do . They had enquire the vet clinic if they would face at her and if they should leave her at the veterinary surgeon or if they should take her to the shelter . Our veterinary office said “ Please allow for her here , she needs immediate care and she needs a bunch of the immediate guardianship . We will take her , we ’ll do the work and we will then hear and observe her home . ” So they left her with the veterinarian .
After about a week they gave Chloe lots of fluids , they got her eating some frump food and they got some of her frostbite cared for but she still had a long road to retrieval . She was quick for a surrogate home now . I got a phone call from our veterinarian , she enounce “ I jazz that you ’ve rescue many packer , ” we bechance to have had a boxer put down about three months before that and she had leukemia and so we drop off her , ” and our vet read “ We know you lost one a few months back . If you have n’t found another one , if you ’re search for another one , we have this girl here , she ’s very sweet , we know you ’d give her a skillful home and that ’s what we ’re bet for , and even if you could just further her for a short time until we obtain her home that would be very good . ”
So we had another packer at the time , we brought that Boxer who was also a female person , Mattie , we brought Mattie over to impose Chloe and they got along very well , so we took Chloe into her home . A very foresightful news report light , she needed a pot of care forthwith , she needed a plenty of lodgings , she needed extra creams to get her hide back to where it needed to be , she needed some special nutrition to get back on lead nutritionally where she needed to be .
Chloe had been breed . Our vet estimated she was somewhere between two and three yr old , and we had Chloe fixed because she was n’t spayed when we grow her . When our vet opened her up she could tell from the scarring on her uterus that she had had either three or four litter of puppies already , so at two years quondam that ’s just unheard of . Most dogs are n’t bred at all by the time that they bump off two age former , so the fact that she had been bred that many times already means that she had been bred in every high temperature that she ’d had in her life-time so far and that ’s very unhealthful for the dog .
It stunted Chloe ’s growth and some of her health issues maybe because of that . So we had Chloe spayed and we thought we were kind of in the clear , we were moving on , we were treating her skin and we are doing the things that we postulate to do to get her back on track nutritionally .
About six months after I assume Chloe she had an instalment after I was knead at home that sidereal day and after work I went up the stairs and I could n’t find Chloe . She was in our way and she was laying , she was let a hard time breathing and there was a lot of issues go on . I could tell something was n’t right with her .
We engage her into the exigency vet and after a five mean solar day arrest at the emergency vet clinic in our region it was determined that Chloe had cardiomyopathy which is a congenital disease , which means the heel ’s born with the disease , and it ’s an grownup attack disease . So the blackguard is born with the disease but they do n’t jump prove symptoms until they are an adult .
Typically , the average age for packer to show mark of cardiomyopathy would be about the eld of nine . Chloe was , as I mentioned , perhaps three at the time so this was very early onset and they – again our vet is absolutely amazing , we ca n’t talk extremely enough about her – they all worked together , they contacted a canine heart specialist . I live in Maine and there is n’t one in our Department of State , so they contacted in the next province over , in New Hampshire just across the border , spoke with that cardiologist and they work with Chloe for five days to get her medications right . She now have two medications , one she takes doubly a day , one she take three times a day , so that ’s five pills a twenty-four hours to govern her heartbeat .
Now bring this all back and bind it in , now that you bonk Chloe , a little bit about Chloe and a little bit about her history , Chloe was give birth with this disease , this is an issue that should have been tested for before Chloe ’s female parent was spawn but it was n’t . Obviously it was extend on to the puppies in Chloe ’s litter .
Our vet and the cardiologists and the squad that works with Chloe conceive that this was either a puppy mill eccentric organization or just a veryirresponsible backyard stock breeder who bred multiple generations of dogswith cardiomyopathy . Whether they had the original hotdog test and knew about it and did it anyway , or they just did n’t do the proper examination that they should have generation ago .
Maybe Chloe ’s great dandy grandmother had it , passed it down to her great nan , overtake it down to the grandma , pass it down to the female parent , now it ’s passed down to Chloe and because it runs so compact in her genetics , for some grounds Chloe ’s symptoms showed up very ahead of time . It did n’t wait until she was eight or nine years old ; they showed up when she was three .
So the squad that ferment with Chloe consider that because of these symptoms showing up so too soon it was a sign that this run very weighed down in Chloe ’s genetic science . And that means that there are generations of Canis familiaris out there somewhere , generations of boxers from Chloe ’s family who have this disease , most of them probably did n’t survive .
The cardiologist that we spoke with said that many time when a Canis familiaris is diagnosed with this , because it ’s such an expensive disease to diagnose and it ’s such an expensive disease to treat ( we pay about a hundred and 20 clam a calendar month for Chloe ’s prescriptions ; that ’s not something that every family can afford ) , so oftentimes if a family ca n’t afford it they have the dog put down . So if you cerebrate about that , think of all the multiplication in Chloe ’s lineage that have either lived a scant life couple or been put down because of this disease , and all of that result back to irresponsible nurture of dogs .
I would say in my family this is our spoilt case scenario of health issues that have come about in a dog because of irresponsible breeding . We ’ve had others , a lot of sentence they ’re more mild , some coxa issues and thing like that , but in this case with Chloe it was very severe where we are very grateful every day that she ’s still here with us and we do n’t take any day with her for granted because we know that her life history is run to be snub very brusque because of this .
Again , this is something that hits very near and dear to my heart , it ’s something that as favourite owners we need to be aware of , it ’s something that breeders obviously need to be aware of . If you are a breeder and you ’re heed properly now , exercise with a restricted organization like the American Kennel Club or the American Dog Breeders Association , get those screenings for the parents of the puppies that you ’re going to be breeding .
Now these can be all dissimilar tasks . If you ’re a stock breeder you probably already have it away about them : there ’s eye tests and hip tests and thing like that , to test for genetic diseases and congenital disease like Chloe had . If you are a breeder you need to take this very seriously . However , if you ’re a stock breeder you already know about this , you know about these risks and I highly encourage you , like I said , to do the correct thing – to work with an organization that can help you through the step of proper rearing , to do your enquiry before you decide to become a stock breeder .
In this podcast particularly I want to focalise on the sheath if you ’re a potential preferred parent , and the rationality that I like to educate masses about irresponsible breeding of dogs , and talk about this . So many times people want to adopt a frank from a puppy factory , people want to take on a domestic dog from a backyard breeder who is n’t the most responsible stock breeder because they feel uncollectible for the puppies . Their goal is to get a puppy out of this environment , out of the situation and they think “ If I adopt this pup it ’s not depart to have to live on in this environment any longer . ”
They think that they ’re doing a good thing , and that does make sense and I see how one could call back about that , but if you flip it around and bet at it from the other side , as we all screw there are two sides to every story … If you look at it from the other side , what you ’re doing is , for illustration , if I had catch Chloe as a pup , I paid this breeder for this hound , I get Chloe home , I ’ve now given this stock breeder five , six , eight hundred , a thousand dollars , whatever it might be , I ’ve pay for this pup . I ’ve give the breeder the money and now this breeder is going to apply that money to turn around and continue to be an irresponsible stock breeder , to buy more grownup dogs . To maybe bring more dogs into their environs , adopt another dog into their dwelling house to be breed .
You ’re allow for them with money to give these puppies food , to course the parents , that kind of stuff , and you might opine “ I ’m hold them money so they can take care of the bounder that they ’re going to have anyway . ” Actually , if you do n’t adopt one of those puppy there ’s something else that you may do to help carry through the puppies and the dog that that person ’s caring now , and it ’s also something you may do that ’s going to aid future puppies that may come out of that establishment .
give the establishment and go and call your local animal control officer , your local ASPCA . These people will come in , they ’ll do an review and they ’ll see what ’s going on and if these firedog are not being properly deal for they ’re run short to dispatch the dogs from the home . They ’ll remove the adult dogs and the puppies . So by not adopt a dog you ’re not spending the money to continue to have this establishment continue business , and you ’re also go to be able-bodied to step away from the situation and call somebody that can help get these dogs into a better environment where they ’re going to be decently cared for .
Now does that have in mind that this stock breeder is not going to go out and start again ? I ca n’t say you that , however , what I can tell you is that oftentimes it ’s a large head start up to buy these dogs , to buy the adult dog-iron to cover , and it ’s a start up cost to take care of the puppies at first before you could trade them and that kind of hooey . If the dogs are removed , chance are the irresponsible breeder may not have the money to turn around and begin a whole other byplay venture .
That ’s what you could do , it ’s something that ’s go to be beneficial to not just the pup that you want to economise but it ’s go to be good to all the hotdog that have gone through that establishment and all the frump that may go through that institution in the future . That ’s what I would recommend if you chance a breeder that you recollect is an irresponsible stock breeder . Do not dramatize a puppy thought you ’re doing something salutary , walk away , call the proper authority and they can help you with that .
Now the other downside to spending the money for this dog , again , I ’ll go back and use Chloe as an instance : if I had adopted Chloe , if I had paid for her , I ’m spending $ 500 on Chloe . I ’m have her abode and now three twelvemonth down the route we have all these matter that come in up that we ’ve seen with the cardiomyopathy and we ’re hold all these pump test done and we ’re buy these prescription drug anovulatory drug and all of this poppycock .
Now we expend over one hundred dollars a calendar month , that ’s over twelve hundred dollars a year just on Chloe ’s medicine , that ’s not including her food , her grooming needs , all of the supplies that we have to buy for her on top of that , that ’s twelve hundred dollar a twelvemonth just on her medicinal drug . Now we ’ve already pass money to adopt the dog and maybe patently as a pet proprietor when you take up a pup you ’re not thinking you might have a thousand dollars , fifteen hundred dollars squirreled away somewhere in guinea pig your cad needs an emergency brake operating room or for when your hot dog necessitate to be spayed or neuter or that sort of stuff which is the responsible matter to do , I extremely encourage that .
However , if you have fifteen hundred dollars squirreled off that ’s going to pay for Chloe ’s prescriptions for a year , that ’s not going to pay for any of her other vet care . The bill that we convey after her five twenty-four hour period stay put at the exigency vet was almost four thousand dollar , so if you had fifteen hundred dollars saved , that ’s not even half of what you need for that one weekend stay at the emergency ex-serviceman . So you ’re paying for the pawl and now further down the road you do n’t have the money to care for the dog , what do your options then become ?
With a dog like Chloe you do n’t have a lot of options because you ca n’t turn this dog over to a shelter . Now you may retrieve some character of rescue arrangement that can take her and it can give to give for her fear , but it ’s going to be very unmanageable to do that if you are able-bodied to . If you are not able to and you ’re not able-bodied to afford her guardianship , the heel ’s going to be put down . You ’ve spent $ 500 on this dog , you ’ve now loved and cared for this Canis familiaris in your base for three years and you ’re going to have to lose that cad because of unconventional bringing up .
So it ’s really a lose - lose on both ends if you pay for the detent , you ’re help the breeder continue to do something that should not be pass , you are fostering that irresponsible breeding program . You ’re also move to be pay for it in the long running because you ’re croak to either lose your wiener early or you ’re run to be paying much more money than you expect pay to care for this Canis familiaris over their entire life .
If you ’re a likely pet parent you require to front for a reputable breeder because adopting a dog from an irresponsible breeder is just not go bad to exploit , no matter which way you reckon at it , it ’s a negative thing , so you need to look for responsible breeder . I reach on a piddling bit when I was tattle about breeders that may be listening to this podcast powerful now . You require to look for a stock breeder that ’s had those proper testing done and you do n’t want to just take someone ’s word for it , there needs to be software documentation of this .
There ’s going to be test done on the eyes , testing done on the hips , genetic examination done for the diseases that are passed genetically , and you desire proof of that , you want to see the write proof of that . You should also be allowed to tour the adeptness . If you call a breeder and you say , “ I ’m seem to adopt one of your puppies . I saw your ad online … see your ad in the paper , ” or whatever the case may be , “ I visit your sign out by the road . I want to come in , I need to chequer out these puppies . ” If there ’s any kind of apology , if they give you the runaround to test and detain that or anything like that …
A responsible breeder is go to receive you in , “ perfectly . occur on in , come see the dogs , come see the adults , make out see the mother and the Church Father , occur see the validation that we act upon from . ” Because at the terminal of the day a responsible stock breeder is going to be just as curious about you as you are go to be about them . You want to know that they ’re an upstanding breeder , that they ’re doing what they need to do to by rights wish for their Canis familiaris . And on the snotty-nosed side they want the same thing from you .
They need to know that the person that ’s select one of their puppies is an solid favorite owner , is going to be something that ’s going to give this hotdog the honey , the nurturing , and the caring that it needs for the rest period of its life . So that ’s depart to mean that they want to see how you interact with the firedog , they want to know about your chronicle . Do you work from habitation ? Do you work out of the home ? How many hour a daytime are you gone ? Is the puppy going to be alone all the time ? Do you have small fry ? Do you institute the dog traveling with you ? Hiking ? Things like that . What are you look for ?
Now the stock breeder is going to do this for a act of reason . The first one being that they of course want their dog to go to a family that ’s going to love them and give care for them . The second being that they also require to check that that the breed that they have is go to be a paroxysm for your kinsperson , and you want to do the same thing . A stock breeder should talk to you about what you ’re look for in a dog .
For example we have a Labrador retriever . Labs are very mellow free energy , they have a peck of energy , they love to run , they love to be busy . science lab can … they are prostrate to being overweight because they bang to eat so they need to be in a family where they ’re mother a destiny of exercise , they ’re get a lot of bodily process . Labs love to be outside , they love to be in the water system .
So if you went to a breeder who bred Labradors and you said , “ Geez you know I ’m lead a fortune . I work 12 time of day a day and then I commute an hour or two , so I ’m gone for about 13 hour a day . I live by myself , I do n’t have any tike and a slew of metre on the weekends I am running errand and I go to tiffin with my girlfriends and I ’m doing thing and the dog ’s in the kennel sometimes on the weekend , ” or “ The dog ’s alone on the weekend , ” or whatever the case may be . They ’re credibly going to encourage you to seem into another breed of dog , and actually if your life is that busy you probably would n’t be quick for a dog anyway .
But you understand what I ’m saying , if you have a modus vivendi that a bounder is not go to fit out in the stock breeder may tell you just that , “ Geez you recognize these bounder are really high energy , they have sex … they ’re a kin dog , they love to be around kids , they love to be active , they fuck to be outdoors , and you just do n’t have that eccentric of lifestyle . ” If you live in an flat for good example they may say “ Geez you endure in a footling one - bedroom apartment , you may take your weenie for two walks a day , that really is n’t enough for a lab . perhaps you should look for a smaller stock or a breed that ’s going to be well become for flat lifespan . ”
So the breeder wants to bonk as much about you as you require to have it away about them and they should be very welcoming and very subject of that . They should absolutely let you tour the quickness any time , no excuses . I mean of course if the facility is closed , if somebody is function away for the daylight or whatever , but if they ’re giving you the tally around for two or three time in a row that , “ Oh I ca n’t do it today and I do n’t really know , I ’ll have to call you back with a just prison term , ” and that kind of stuff , you need to stay away from that , you really do n’t want to go anywhere that does not welcome you in with undecided arms .
They should also when you go into the facility you should be able to see . Most of the prison term you’re able to see both parent , traditionally even if a breeder studs a dog . If they have the female person and they stud out for the male they will either have the male gossip there so that you’re able to conform to the dog or they ’ll have a story on the father so that you’re able to bonk about that . They should have some flick , perhaps some videos , and in spades the history on the founding father .
Now the mother of form should be on site take care of the puppies , that ’s something you require to make indisputable happens , and you should be capable to interact with the adult dogs as well . You require to see the histories for both parents . The stock breeder again whether they have both dogs on website or not should have a very elaborated story for both of the parents . They should also be working with a veterinarian , that ’s where that account should come from .
They should be working with a vet that knows the history of the parents and have seen the puppy multiple times . If you ’re going in to get a bounder and you know you ca n’t take on till they ’re at least eight week onetime , but go in to contain out the puppies when they ’re six weeks sometime , these dogs should be see by a veterinary surgeon already two or three times in that six week . They should have had certain shots already and they should have been checked out by a veterinarian .
So you want to be aware of that , ask who the vet is , see if there ’s any documentation from that . If they do n’t have a muckle of entropy give the vet a call , stop by the office and just say , “ Hey I ’m interested in these puppies . ” They ’ll give you five minutes of prison term to talk to you about what they sleep together about the pups and about the parents .
Also one of thing you want to await for when you go to the facility is that there should n’t be more than one breed of dog . If they ’re breed Labradors and Boxers and Chihuahuas all at the same property that may be a sign that there is some type of a puppy mill or a very irresponsible breeding program going on . Usually for a pocket-sized facility there should only be one bedding at any time ; one stock and one litter at any metre .
Sometimes bigger places if they ’re a larger breeding adeptness they may have eight or ten adult dog-iron and they may have more than one litter at a fourth dimension , but you need to label that free-base on the size of it of the facility . And when you go in and you tour you ’ll be able to see oftentimes if they have more than one litter at a clock time , they ’ll have somebody help to fall in and serve with those other dogs , it ’s not just a pocket-sized footling adroitness with two or three grownup , they ’ve got a circle of grownup dogs and they may have more than one litter but often times it ’s one litter at a time and for certain one strain at a time . Responsible breeders usually plunk a strain and they stick with that breed . So that ’s something to look for .
Again , if you find a cad that ’s in a situation where they ’re not being properly care for , if you require to adopt a pup and you’re able to … some of these gun trigger you ’re detect that maybe the stock breeder is n’t as creditworthy as they need to be , do not adjudicate and help one of those puppy by follow them . Step back , call the fauna control officer , call the local ASPCA and do something to help all of those puppies and their parents . That is my advice for anybody .
Do n’t forget to go forth me a review on iTunes , I am trying to assist as many dog owners as I can , reach as many potential pet owners as I can and get this information out there to assist educate citizenry . So the faster that my podcast grows , I will be able to reach out to more pet parent and more potential preferent parent , as it grows I ’ll also be capable to get to out to institute in more restricted pet expert for interviews and question and reply sessions that will avail the favored owners that I reach with my podcast . So please go to iTunes and give me a speedy review and a evaluation , it only takes a second and it will be a huge assistance for this show .
And next week when I add up back with a new episode , for next week any questions that gravel out on there , any that are ask multiple times or anything like that I ’m going to take a couple of those questions and I ’ll answer those on the air next week . So if you record a motion you may be on next week ’s podcast so give that a try as well . I hope you guy cable really enjoyed my first podcast , again I ’m so thrilled to share all of this with you and I hope you guys strain in next week for my second episode .
