Most the great unwashed know what a wolverine is ( thank you , Marvel ) . But most people will never see a Gulo gulo in the wild , even if they pass their whole life trying . A formerpark rangerrecently had a once - in - a - lifetime experience image a wolverine in Yellowstone National Park , and the encounter is now going viral .

He initially thought the dark , low-down - to - the - ground creature on the road in front of them was a young blackbear . But when the animal turned to look back at the group , he immediately realize that they had add up across a much uncommon , far more problematical animal : a wolverine .
Lyon give up his gondola , and the group watched the wolverine for around three minutes , during which time Lyons lose it some photos and the invitee captured a video . The wolverine was around 200 yards away from them .
" By its size , I assume that it is a healthy male person , " Lyons told Daily Paws in an email . " The wolverine was emphatically curious for a moment . It jump up onto the snow shoulder adjacent to our lane double and fall to the road to size us up as our vehicle was finish , idle . "
Lyon toldPetaPixelthat at one point , the skunk bear sat on the side of the road and watched them with his olfactory organ raised , probably smell their scent wafting toward him . " It could have been on the hunting for intellectual nourishment , as the tracks point that it followed a set ofmoosetracks downhill from the dense woods . "
First Council of Lyons state he would like to believe this was the wolverine ’s first close clash with human beings .
Why Are Wolverine Sightings So Rare?
Wolverine , the largest member of the weasel home , are almost entirely sole and live in outside , tough , mellow - elevationhabitats in North America , Europe , and Asia . Wolverines also drop most of their waken hour fromdusk to dayspring roaming farsighted distance in hunt of food , with a male person ’s annual range extending a whopping350 square miles .
Very fewwolverines inhabit the lower 48 state . And only an estimated 6 - 7 wolverines dwell in Yellowstone ’s 2.2 million landed estate .
Lyons , who has live and work in Yellowstone for nearly 22 years , says this is only his second wolverine sighting . But the first wolverine Lyons see was so far by , all he could really order was that it was n’t a bear .
found on the tracks , Earth - renowned wildlife tracker James C. Halfpenny , Ph . D.,told PetaPixelthe Gulo luscus Lyons and guests saw spent less than 130 yards on the road , mean they were very favourable to have spot it at all .
" So we actually were very blessed to be there at that exact present moment to find this rare animal , " Lyons state Daily Paws .
